Discovering the physical onerous activities in manual sesame grain harvest using postural analysis CIGR Journal
Hayati, Abdullah; Marzban, Afshin; Leylizadeh, Masoud.
The sesame oil is accounted as high-priced and high-quality oil, but its production is less than that of major oilseeds due to labor-intensive harvest similar to many agricultural activities. These types of activities are often onerous leading the workers to occupational risk factors such as musculoskeletal disorders. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the manual sesame grain harvest (consisting of work tasks of mowing, tying and shaking) regarding postural workloads to identify onerous activities during this operation which would help to mitigate some problems of the sesame grain production chain. Ovako Working posture Analysis System (OWAS) was used for working posture analysis of twenty-six male workers employed for this study. Results showed...

DNA damage and cytotoxicity in pathology laboratory technicians exposed to organic solvents Anais da ABC (AABC)
AQUINO,TATIANE DE; ZENKNER,FERNANDA F.; ELLWANGER,JOEL H.; PRÁ,DANIEL; RIEGER,ALEXANDRE.
The aim of this study was to evaluate potential DNA damage and cytotoxicity in pathology laboratory technicians exposed to organic solvents, mainly xylene. Peripheral blood and buccal cells samples were collected from 18 technicians occupationally exposed to organic solvents and 11 non-exposed individuals. The technicians were sampled at two moments: Monday and Friday. DNA damage and cytotoxicity were evaluated using the Comet Assay and the Buccal Micronucleus Cytome assay. Fifteen subjects (83.5%) of the exposed group to solvents complained about some symptom probably related to contact with vapours of organic solvents. DNA damage in the exposed group to solvents was nearly 2-fold higher on Friday than on Monday, and in both moments the individuals of...

Hygiene monitoring of textiles used in the food industry BJM
Fijan,Sabina; Cencic,Avrelija; Turk,Sonja Šostar.
Protective clothing is required in the food-processing industry, to protect workers from contamination by bacteria, fungi, viruses, prions etc. contained in the secretions and raw meat of slaughtered animals, and to protect the meat from being contaminated by microorganisms carried by the workers. It is well-understood that textiles are a control point (CP), and must be appropriately cleaned and disinfected in order to prevent biocontamination. Although the laundering procedure itself is important for achieving disinfection, it is also essential to maintain an appropriate hygiene level in the laundry, in order to prevent recontamination of textiles by environmental viable microorganisms. In this study, a sanitary-microbiological analysis was carried out in...

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus sp. colonizing health care workers of a cancer hospital BJM
Costa,Dayane de Melo; Kipnis,André; Leão-Vasconcelos,Lara Stefânia Netto de Oliveira; Rocha-Vilefort,Larissa Oliveira; Telles,Sheila Araújo; André,Maria Cláudia Dantas Porfírio Borges; Tipple,Anaclara Ferreira Veiga; Lima,Ana Beatriz Mori; Ribeiro,Nádia Ferreira Gonçalves; Pereira,Mayara Regina; Prado-Palos,Marinésia Aparecida.
The aim of the study was to analyze epidemiological and microbiological aspects of oral colonization by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus of health care workers in a cancer hospital. Interview and saliva sampling were performed with 149 health care workers. Antimicrobial resistance was determined by disk diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration. Polymerase Chain Reaction, Internal Transcribed Spacer-Polymerase Chain Reaction and Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis were performed for genotypic characterization of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus. Risk factors were determined by logistic regression. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus colonization prevalence was 19.5%, denture wearing (p = 0.03), habit of nail biting (p = 0.04) and preparation and...

Respiratory risks in broiler production workers Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Alencar,M do CB de; Nääs,I de A; Gontijo,LA.
There are many situations that involve health risks to the Brazilian rural worker, and animal production is just one of them. Inhalation of organic dust, which has many microorganisms, leads in general to respiratory allergic reactions in some individuals, "asthma-like syndrome", and mucous membrane inflammation syndrome, that is a complex of nasal, eye, and throat complaints. Furthermore, workers might have farmer's hypersensitivity pneumonia, that is a respiratory health risk along the years. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential pulmonary health risks in poultry production workers in the region of Curitiba, PR, Brazil. Interviews using a pre-elaborated questionnaire with 40 questions were made with 37 broiler production workers,...

Rural workload: study performed in two rural environments in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Ciência Rural
Rocha,Laurelize Pereira; Borges,Anelise Miritz; Bonow,Clarice Alves; Almeida,Marlise Capa Verde de; Piexak,Diéssica Roggia; Cezar-Vaz,Marta Regina.
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to analyze loads resulting from the rural work of fruit and vegetable farmers. This exploratory and descriptive study was conducted with 259 farm workers from two rural environments. A semi-structured questionnaire based on the concepts of NASA-TLX was used to assess workload. The male and female workers of one environment reported that the demand that contributed the most to their workload was the level of total effort, while the women of the other environment reported that the physical demand was more relevant for WL. In conclusion, evidence concerning workload supports further investigation into the health of rural workers and the development of preventive strategies related to rural work.

Work activities and workers' health in broiler production: a case study Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Alencar,M do CB de; Naas,IA; Gontijo,LA.
The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of health related symptoms and to analyze the work activities of workers in contracted non-mechanized broiler farms in two regions of the state of Paraná in order to determine possible factors associated to those symptoms. The methods consisted in selecting the houses and the workers, and to apply a questionnaire that included demographic data, questions related to work, the Nordic Questionnaire for Musculoskeletal Symptoms, other symptoms (runny nose, skin itching, throat and eye irritation). In addition, workers were asked if they enjoyed their job, if the supervisor motivated them to work, and if they were afraid to lose their job. Activities were submitted to systematic observations, adapted...
